Option makes available HSO drivers in DEB and RPM format

Option has always keenly supported the Linux integrator but now they have made their driver package available for normal Linux user too.

The driver is now available in deb, rpm and tgz format and incorporate dkms. Using dkms means that the driver will be automatically recompiled for you if your distribution updates the kernel in any way. This is particularly important for users whose kernels already ship a version of the HSO driver.

This release supports all the new devices from Option and is compatible with kernels from 2.6.27 up to and including 2.6.34.

Extra convenience has been added - the package use usb-modeswitch in combination with UDEV rules to fully automate ZeroCD CDROM switching.

All in all a big step forward. :)

The drivers are available from my HSO driver forum. The latest versions will always be stickied at the top of the forum. (As of writing this post the driver package version is 1.1.0.)

Very helpful, but...

Basically it seems to me a good idea to switch automatically from mass storage to modem mode when inserting a 3G modem. But newer USB sticks like my Option 515m have not only the well-known "zerocd" but also a micro-SD card (4GB in my case) which becomes also automatically inaccessible by using udev based automatic mode-switching. What about the idea to create a small (python) script which would pop up a dialog box (triggered by udev) with 2 buttons and ask if one wanted to use the mass storage or the modem mode?
Unfortunately I have no experience in writing python scripts, so perhaps someone who is more skilled could realize this?

Kind regards from France
Thierry
